Photo Philosophy

"The camera should be used for a recording of life, for rendering the very substance and quintessence of the thing itself, whether it be polished steel or palpitating flesh."

This encapsulates the philosophy I seek to engender in my photographs.   Following the trails blazed by the Group f/64,  my workflow concentrates on creating scenes of the world 'as it is'; pre-visualizing the image and capturing that vision for developing as a fine print.  While I produce both black & white and color prints,  the majority of the work presented here will be monochrome images.

In the digital world,  black & white and color share the same source information. The process of desaturating the colors to a monochrome image with appropriate contrast, shadows and highlights becomes the 'digital darkroom' challenge.   The result is two very different interpretations of the same scene.

Presenting monochrome images side-by-side with color images can be conflicting at best, and possibly even disruptive.   To provide a purer environment in which to  view images without needing to 'cleanse the viewing palate'  in a constant shifting between the two modes, the site catalogs are separated.
