Formed by the action of water on the sandstone material, these very narrow canyons, known as 'slot canyons', with walls that are 30-50' high. In many areas the curvature of the walls prevents viewing the sky. This results in light and shadows in colors from bright yellow to deep purple. Occasional sunlight shafts penetrate to the floor creating the 'beams of light' for which the canyon is famous. While the colors are impressive, monochrome images of the canyon give it an ethereal, almost mysterious, quality.
