: TR5002 Old Auto Trail - Lincoln National ForestTrail Rating : Good trail. Much like the trail from No Hands Bridge on WST up to Robie Point. Down hill on the way out.
Description : Part of the rails-to-trails effort. Trail (TR5002) is actually the old auto road up the mountain from Almagordo. It has a gravel surface, and a 5-6% grade down the mountain. This is on the west side of the mountain, so a morning run is in the shade most of the way out and back. The Rim Trail, about 22 miles in length, is also in the area. Length : 7-8 miles- TR 5002 intersects with other trails so that longer runs can be defined.
Footing : The footing ranges from great to rough. Many small stones in the trail and there are sections with larger rocks to work around. You also have to watch for the cactus along the trail. Some grow close and you can catch their thorns.
Terrain Profile : This is an out and back effort. The trail has about a 5-6% slope going out. Thus a challenging climb on the way back.
Water Availability : Carry it. Available at picnic area.
