Trail : Gila National Forest TR 151

Trail Rating : Great, a Western State type trail

Description : This trail is at the the Gila Cliff Dwellings site. The West Fork Trail(151) follows the west fork of the Gila River. There are several splits in the trail but I followed the Hells Hole Trail up the river. The trail goes up the canyon, crossing and recrossing the river uncountable times. There is a combination of open meadows, pine forests and river bed.

Length : 11.4 miles - Hells Hole - One Way(22.8 out and back)

Footing : The footing ranges from great to rough. Many small stones in the trail and there are sections with larger rocks to work around. You also have to watch for the cactus along the trail. Some grow close and you can catch their thorns.

Terrain Profile : While the run is generally up hill on the way out. It is fairly gentle. There are a number of climbs away from the river that go for 200-400 yards. None of these go up more than 50-100 feet.

Water Availability : Carry it. Available at Picnic area.

Access : Parking area a trail head.

Other Users : Horses, hikers, but saw none.

Driving Directions : North on N M 15 out of Silver city. The trip from Silver City takes about 2 hours(it is only 45 miles) because the road is narrow, steep and winding.
